В 1906 году он получил разрешение городской управы на пассажирские перевозки. Первый выход шестиместного "Мерседеса" на улицы Минска состоялся 20 августа.
Но первый блин, как водится, вышел комом. На улице Подгорной (теперь - Энгельса), там, где она спускается к Свислочи, в Губернаторский сад (теперь - парк Горького), водитель пустил автомобиль полным ходом. Тяга тормоза не выдержала, и машина, потеряв управление, врезалась в телеграфный столб. Пассажиров выбросило на мостовую, а оторвавшиеся колеса раскатились в разные стороны, при этом один из пассажиров погиб.
Городские власти на долгие шесть лет отказались от перевозки пассажиров на "моторах". Так что минчанам, не имевшим собственных экипажей, приходилось передвигаться по булыжным мостовым на медлительной конке.
Однако технический прогресс - дело активное и настойчивое. В канун первой мировой войны в Минске вовсю служили таксомоторами шесть автомобилей марок "Даррак", "Олдсмобил", "Мерседес", "Опель" и "Форд" мощностью от 20 до 35 лошадиных сил. Вмещали они по четыре-шесть пассажиров.
Среди водителей людей случайных не было. Скажем, минчанин Е. Аранович, получивший разрешение на перевозки пассажиров 1 января 1913 года, прошел курс обучения в 1-й Петербургской автошколе.
Как и теперь, у таксомоторов была своя стоянка, пока только одна - в сквере на углу улиц Захарьевской (нынче проспект Скорины) и Петропавловской (Энгельса).
В советские времена первые такси на улицах города появились в 1934 г. 30 июня в газете "Рабочий" было написано: "Мингорсовет для трамвайного треста получил 5 такси, для которых выделены стоянки на вокзале, площади Свободы, у парка культуры и отдыха, площади им. Шмидта". 20 февраля 1938 г. "Белгостранс" получил с Горьковского автозавода 20 новеньких "эмок" (автомобиль "М-1") как такси с целью обслуживания жителей и гостей столицы БССР. Однако на улицы города реально вышли только 5 автомобилей. Остальные потерялись при перераспределении между учреждениями и ведомствами.
В 1950-е годы в качестве такси использовались "Победы".
